The Lighthouse Keeper's Count

Twenty steps wind up to the lamp. Tom would rather not type all of them.

The inspector arrives on Thursday with a clipboard and a serious face. Every step of the spiral staircase must be numbered, she says, in case someone trips in the dark. Tom counts the steps once with his finger — twenty — and sighs at the thought of writing each number out by hand.

Then he remembers: he doesn't have to. He can simply ? the steps from one to twenty, and the rest takes care of itself.

About this verb

gather creates a list of numbers from a starting point to an ending point. It's like remember, but for ranges you'd rather not type out by hand.
