Each packet in Iris's seed tin is labelled with a number — the days it takes that variety to germinate. The summer is short this year. The slow ones won't have time, and she wants them out of her tin entirely.
So first she'll ? the seeds where each is above fourteen days. Gone. Not coming back.
Her neighbour Joren, on the other hand, only plants the fast ones. She'd like to hand him a little packet of those — without disturbing what's left in her own tin. For that she'll ? the seeds where each is below seven days, into a new list she can give him at the gate.
